Impact of Current Events on Traffic

Given the rash of airplane crashes in recent weeks, I was interested to see how some of our focused aviation accident sites were affected. The chart to the left comes from a client who has a focused plane accident site. As you can see the bump in traffic corresponds with the successful water landing of a US Airways flight in NYC, followed by another large spike after the tragic accident in Buffalo.

These types of current event inspired spikes are typically more pronounced with specialty sites. This is because the narrowly focused content usually contains a much larger universe of event related keywords. I saw a similar spike when Andrew Thomas announced a major prostitution sting operation in August. For that month, Howard Snader saw traffic to his sex crimes website jump over 250%.

Active BLOGs are particuraly useful in responding to current events since they are updated regularly and can react to the incident with real time information, which the search engines appreciate.

Accomplished African American Attorneys

February is Black history month. No where is the progress of Black America more evident than in the legal profession. The recent election of an African-Amercian Lawyer is just the latest important milestone from a profession that has already produced two black Supreme Court Justices; Clarence Thomas and Thurgood Marshall. Amazing when you consider that in many parts of the country, a legal education for an African American was close to impossible just 50 years ago. Today the internet provides a great marketing outlet for numerous black owned firms throughout the country.

2009 Top Law Schools

The US News & World report recently released their top law school list. While controversial, the list does carry a lot of influence in terms of choosing schools. The website www.top-law-schools.com/rankings.html provides ranking information from the three main ranking bodies; US News, The Gourman Report, and the Educational Quality Rankings.

A ranking of the top 2000 undergrad schools also just came out; http://www.stateuniversity.com/rank/score_rank.html Unfortunately the list does little to settle the ASU-Arizona debate. Both finished in the top 20 percent of schools - With ASU at 389 and Arizona slightly higher at 384. Stanford topped the list followed by M.I.T and my Alma mater, the United States Military Academy! However, West Point finished close to last in a Princeton Review list of top party schools - a ranking that I unhappily have to agree with.
